Inside a Plow truck

Have you ever wondered what the inside of a plow truck looks like? It's a pretty busy place!

Driving a plow means:

  • Operating three different plows (the underbody plow, the front plow, and the wing plow).
  • Keeping a watchful eye on traffic and communicating on the radio.
  • Shifting an 18-speed transmission.
  • Adjusting the application and spread rate of winter aggregate (sand and salt mixtures).
  • Turning the winter aggregate spinner on/off to decrease the chances of spraying oncoming traffic.
  • Operating the side dump, which discharges winter aggregate in front of the plow.

To keep everyone safe in the winter, when you encounter snow plows and other winter vehicles on the road, please remember to slow down, give crews lots of room to work, pass only when/if safe to do so, and NEVER pass a snow plow on the right - you could hit the wing plow.
